iOS

Publiss for iOS supports iOS 8. It is optimised for use with the iPhone 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6+, iPad 3, 4, iPad Air, Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini retina and iTouch.

Android

Publiss for Android supports API levels 15+, which means it can be used on any device that is running Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 or newer. It is optimised for devices with xlarge screens 960dp x 720dp, large screens 640dp x 480dp and normal screens 470dp x 320dp.

Webview

Publiss for Web is accessible from all major web browsers supporting HTML5 and CSS3.


iOS Core

iOS Kiosk

The kiosk is the main user interface for the iOS client, reflecting the latest iOS design concepts and user experience. It can be customised to reflect the corporate or brand identity of a customer or their digital titles.

Kiosk Menu

The kiosk menu can be accessed via the button in the kiosk header or by swiping from left to right. There is a place for a logo to be included. The kiosk menu is the main navigation control for the iOS client.

Feature Area

The Publuss iOS kiosk comes with a dynamic area at the top of the kiosk where you can highlight an issue with an image. The feature is associated with an issue to give it greater exposure in the kiosk.

Issue Preview

Prior to purchasing or downloading a digital edition a page preview of it is available using the iOS design standard. The preview consists of the title, a description and price, which are configurable in the Publiss CMS.

Issue Download

Digital editions within your iOS DPS can be downloaded free-of-charge, as an in-app purchase or if the in-app subscription add-on is integrated, as part of a subscription too.

Covers & Labels

Your publications are displayed within your iOS kiosk with images from the covers of your digital editions. As a customisable option you can present labels below the cover images with the title of the issue.

Google Analytics

Gain insights into how your iOS app is being used and learn about the audiences that use them with Google Analytics integration. Google Analytics iOS adds to the suite of statistics already available from the Publiss CMS.

In-App Purchases

The Publiss iOS digital publishing solution (DPS) supports in-app purchases as standard. This enables you to sell individual issues from within your kiosk and manage payments via your own Apple Developer Account.

Page Viewing

Publiss delivers a page-curl mode, a unique page turning effect, simulating a real-print experience. You can view single pages or double-page spreads in landscape mode. When you turn the page it is rendered instantly for viewing.

Smart Zoom

Double tapping on a column of text will instantly analyse the page identifying glyths and zoom in to your desired content defined by the column width. You can also use pinch gestures to get closer to the content.

Full-text Search and Thumbnails

Search for keywords​ within your entire PDF. Latin, Cyrillic, Chinese and Arabic characters are indexed and can be searched on. When not using the search, navigate to specific pages using page thumbnails.

Auto Annotations

Urls, emails and phone numbers are automatically detected within the page and can be clicked on to visit a website, send an email or make a call. If page links or hyperlinks are embedded within the PDF, these are also automatically activated.

Markups & Inspector

Group, copy and remove markups. Add images, audio, comments, stamps, objects, lines and freehand drawings to pages. Write text and underline, highlight, strikeout or underwave passages. Use the Inspector with colour picker, add stroke weights and opacity to elements.

Integrated Web Browser

Click on a menu item or annotated link with the PDF and the webpage will open within the app using the integrated web browser.

Multimedia

PDFs can display YouTube videos, videos and audio files together with a media controller. In addition, images can be embedded in the PDF. Multimedia items can be displayed alone or within a gallery.

Publiss Android DPS supports side scrolling and continuous scrolling. You can show one page at a time. You can also set whether a page should be fully displayed or fit to width.

Page Zoom

Publiss Android enables you to double tap or use the pinch gesture to zoom in on specific content. As you zoom in to the text, within the publications, it sharpens to deliver high-definition rendering.

Thumbnails

The thumbnail view is a convenient way to navigate pages within an issue and can be fully customised. You can increase the thumbnail size or even completely disable thumbnail mode.


Webview Core

Online Kiosk

Digital editions are displayed in your own online kiosk using the cover images from your issues. Edition titles and descriptions are displayed as well. Code is provided to enable the kiosk to be integrated into your own website.

Issue Details

Prior to opening a digital edition, details relating to the issue are available so your audience can learn more about its contents. From there it is only a simple click to opening the issue.

Page Viewing

Webview supports side scrolling and page-curl mode. You can show two pages side by side. When the PDF is opened it will perform an analysis of the browser and attempt to maximise its height and width to the dimensions of the browser.

Page Scroll Bar

The scroll bar provides a simple means to flip through the pages of the issue rapidly. This provides an alternative to clicking and dragging each page to display the next.

Progressive Download

With progressive downloading your digital editions can be read whilst it downloads in full.


Multimedia

YouTube videos

If you have your own YouTube channel you can embed your YouTube video content directly into your pages.

Videos

Upload your video content and embed them in your pages. Publiss comes with an in-built media player and supports mov, mp4, wav and avi video formats.

Images

Upload your images and embed them in your pages. Publiss comes with an in-build gallery for viewing multiple images and supports jpg, png, bmp and gif formats.

Audio

Upload your audio content and embed them in your pages. Publiss comes with an in-build media player and supports mp3 and mpg formats.

Galleries

Publiss supports galleries that enable you to display YouTube videos, videos, audio, and images in a single scrollable window. Double tapping a gallery activates full-screen mode.

Web links

Web text links (www...) and links embedded within a PDF are automatically annotated. Additional web links can be added to pages via Publiss Online before publishing.

Email links

Email text links (...@...) and email links embedded within a PDF are automatically annotated. Additional email links can be added to pages via Publiss Online before publishing.

Page links

Page links embedded within a PDF are automatically annotated. Additional page links can be added to pages via Publiss Online before publishing.

Telephone numbers

Telephone numbers within a PDF are automatically annotated. A call can be made to that number by clicking on the annotation via devices that support calls.


CMS

Document Manager

Upload issues with a title, description and cover image. Whilst uploading a PDF, it can be converted to RGB and have any trim marks removed. From the document manager issues can be searched, published and made available across all platforms.

Annotation Editor

The annotation editor is a part of the document manager and is where a PDF can be edited to include additional multimedia content and links before being published. The editor can be viewed in full screen to provide a more convenient ui.

Media Manager

Videos, audio and image files can be uploaded ready to be embedded in editions via the annotation editor. Media can be tagged with terms that will make it easier to filter all media to identify required content.

Feature Area Manager

Artwork can be uploaded and displayed in the feature area of the iOS and Android apps. The artwork is associated with a specific publication, which can be highlighted in the feature area.

User Manager

From the user manager additional users can be associated with an account. These users will have the same administrative access to the account as the original user.

Statistics

Detailed data covering the use of digital editions and the client apps can be analysed. Data is collected to show the number of edition downloads, time spent on pages and edition deletions. In addition, data is collected on the app starts and app opens.

App Store

Publiss for iOS is designed for submission within Apple’s App Store.

Google Play Store

Publiss for Android is designed for submission within the Google Play Store.

Amazon Appstore

Publiss for Android is available for submission within the Amazon Appstore.


Add-on Features

ABO Login & API

Enable your print edition subscribers to login and download the digital edition within your iOS and Android apps. Users can login using their identifier from within your apps. The API connects with your print subscription system (PSS).

In-App Subscriptions

Deliver your digital editions as part of a 1 month, 12 month or seasonal subscription with Android or as part of a 1 week, 1 month or 1 year auto-renewable subscription with the App Store. Subscriptions are available as in-app purchases.

RSS Feed

Display content within your iOS and Android apps through a live rss feed from your web service. Display a feed with images, titles and intro text that opens up the full article in a native view, which will maintain the ascetics of your apps.

Toggle Bar

The toggle bar within your kiosk provides a convenient way for users to switch between defined categories. Tag issues with your own categories to organise them within your kiosk, for example, by publication title, subject area and special theme.

Multi-Language Editions

If you reproduce a single edition several times in different languages, this feature will enable you to create a single 'virtual' edition, which consists of all the editions of different languages and display the appropriate language edition within your kiosk.

Archive

Define the number of issues to be displayed within your kiosk and/or set a date to have older digital editions automatically moved into an archive. Archived editions can still be purchased, downloaded and read within the app.

Push Notifications

Send timely notifications from your apps and inform your users about the release of new editions. No additional configuration is required, the push notification is sent when you publish an edition for the first time.

iBeacon Notifications

Display a notification containing a unique message when a user of your app enters an area where you have established an iBeacon. The message will show on the screen of the users device. From the Publiss CMS you can define the unique message to be displayed for each iBeacons unique ID.

Kiosk Banners

Display clickable banners at the base of your kiosk to generate advertising revenues in your iOS and Android apps. Using the banner API interface from the Publiss CMS you can connect and display banners from your preferred banner web service.
